The "cow mouse" cat toyA good turn-around week, to some extent.

Great meeting Monday.

Big work document got shoved out the door. Of course, I’m still behind on everything else at work.

Laundry is on-going. The cow mouse pictured here is, in fact, fresh from the dryer. My laundry sorting of “Darks, lights, whites, reds, cat toys” apparently missed this guy.

I’m almost caught up with my online writing course. I’m really enjoying it and getting more out of it than I expected. Hurray!

Chicken fajita quesadillas (with home-grown green peppers and remarkably spicy jalapenos!) for dinner. Green peppers will be on the list of plants to grow again next year.

One pie is out of the oven, another is in the oven. A pumpkin pie will help the Fop survive the weekend allllll alone.

I’m leaving for the weekend tomorrow afternoon! I haven’t packed yet. But I have pie.

I’m gearing up for Nanowrimo… next month, 50,000 words!

IMG_0105.JPG I’m apparently having one of those years that flies by. It seems like everything has gone very quickly and all the time I thought I had is also already gone. Such is life, I guess.

The Philadelphia area is threatened with promises of a harsh winter. The local news stations are adding to the hype, naturally. The Farmer’s Almanac actually has us on the border of the cold wet and the cold dry areas so who knows what we’ll actually end up with. I’d certainly prefer more snow to less snow but no one is surprised by this.

I didn’t get very far on Nanowrimo this year. I haven’t had a very productive month as it’s been whipping by. I guess the fact that we were away for the first week didn’t help. I finished a knitting project last night and played with some swatches for some lace patterns with varying degrees of success. I really would appreciate consistent terminology and notation in knitting. I’m told that’s a total pipe dream, but I dream of a day when I don’t have to decipher each knitting pattern according to author’s birth sign, region of origin, phase of the moon and account for current sunspot activity. (Hyperbole, it makes you funnier.)

I have successfully avoided malls all weekend! I did a little online gift shopping and a lot of browsing. I am taking it slowly but I expect the avalanche of the holiday season will hit me soon enough.

IMG_3726Coffee is good stuff. In fact, I’ve been so productive this weekend that I’m going to make the big pot of coffee this week to see if I can continue the momentum. Friday was Social, Saturday was Creative and today was Productive. Monster Cat is done for the week though I’m still prepping the posts. Laundry is, of course, on-going but big box store and grocery shopping is done. The kittens have been good this weekend and, of course, Mr. Paw has been a love dove.

I’ve re-started Nanowrimo. I’m vaguely on track if I stick to a revised pace.

(soft-core spoilers for The Fourth Kind ahead)

We went to see The Fourth Kind last night. I would have enjoyed the movie more if I’d kept up with scuttlebutt around the film. I’d only seen a couple of trailers earlier in the season. So I spent most of the movie dissatisfied with their sources, wanting to follow up on their data and see their bibliography, so to speak. I left less convinced of alien visitations than before, despite Milla Jovovich’s not-so-gentle prodding in the other direction. A few quick searches once I got home and my suspicions were confirmed. Disappointing, but I guess in part it was my own fault for not keeping up with my movie gossip.

You might be crazy if:
a) you get to mid-November and think, “Yeah, I can still finish Nanowrimo.”
b) you get to mid-November and think, “Yeah, I can still finish Nanowrimo.” and then you change your novel concept and start over.
c) you plan to start and finish Nanowrimo in 2 weeks while working on several other projects plus a somewhat unpredictable work schedule.
d) you think the easiest thing you have to do in the next 2 weeks will be writing 3500 words a day and to prove that you write 5000 words to get started.

So yes, I am indeed doing Nanowrimo this year, I’m just off to a late start. I’m at 5054/50,000. A week on a boat and then a somewhat crazy week of other stuff left me a wee bit behind, but I don’t think it’ll be a problem. Right?

IMG_3605“We shall tear this toy to shreds!” declares Abby. “Shreds, I say!!!”

Or rather, the roses are still blooming. Through rain and gray and temperatures in the 50s, the rose bush out front carries on as if it were still August while the climbing rose out back is starting to peter out. We are getting a proper autumn here this year! YAY!

This week has been really busy… work is in a whirlwind, kittens are little tornadoes of energy and my brain hurts quite literally. Oh, and laundry is on-going. Why is laundry *always* on-going? And did I mention we’re going away next week? Tadcaster Cruise. I’ll be working on vacation again, which doesn’t bother me too much as it beats coming home to a huge mess. Plus it gives me the excuse to bring my laptop so I can start working on my Nanowrimo project.

The messages from the cat planet were strong today. Quite strong. Today’s kitten “toys” included: a post-it note of unknown origin, Tennyson, a bottle cap, sister’s tail and my slipper. I also had to defend myself while eating my lunch. The girls have figured out the telltale signs of eating cereal with milk and swarmed me. Tennyson, of course, took a stoic yet expectant pose by my elbow. The little fuzzy ones, though, climbed all over my keyboard and arms in an attempt to get into my bowl. I had to use one hand to defend my cereal and the other to eat.

There are a few more kitten photos up over in their Flickr set.

IMG_3607In the interest of completely random, UserFriendly’s link of the day was an amusing site: Cheese or Font? Dreda, I thought of you immediately.

In other news, NASA would like to reassure us that the world won’t be ending in 2012. [Giggle alert: the linked article uses the phrase "fictional fiction" - you have been warned.] From the article: “People are very gullible,” he added. “It a sad testimonial that you need NASA to tell you the world’s not going to end.” Sad, yes, and media-hyped to a frightening degree. We are also the country where the media went to NORAD to ask about their planned course of action when they thought some little kid had taken off in a balloon the other week.

“Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr,” growls Tasha.
“GRRRrrrrRRRRrrrrrrrr…” she adds more emphatically.

Shameless self-promotion: I have an article up at Internet Evolution about simple tools that can be used to build teams across vast geographical divides.

Lesson learned for the week: Migrating data from one computer to another over wireless is rather foolish as it will take forever. I knew it would take forever, I knew I should just set up a spare ethernet hub… but, instead, I spent a day getting to know my laptop again. However, Apple’s Migration Assistant is an awesome thing. The new Mac Pro is laid out exactly like the old PowerMac G5 now! This is both good and bad… Good because I have almost everything on the new machine and that’s lovely. Bad because, well, now my new machine is as cluttered and busy as my old machine. The new computer would have devolved to that point sooner or later anyway, so I guess I’m efficient. Right? The new machine is zippy and happy.

Hand-woven, natural fibers: Could I do an update without mentioning the kittens? Okay, probably I could, but not this one. The girls clearly enjoy hand-woven fabrics. Their original perch and nap zone was atop a handwoven wool blanket. Now they’re snuggled in behind my sewing machine on a pile of scarves, the top most of which is super-fine merino. Good thing I have a steady source of hand-woven goods to keep the kittens happy, right Mom? At least there’s no doubt that they have excellent taste.

AUTUMN! Tis the season to wear sweaters! Fa-la-la-la-la! The-Fall-is-here! Don we now our warm apparel! Fa-la-la, fa-la-la, FALL IS HERE! Ahem. I might be a little excited about the cooler weather and impending darker months. Just a little. It’s about time. We did have a fairly mild summer, so I didn’t have to complain as loudly or as frequently about heat and humidity. I’ve made applesauce once already and have apples and pears downstairs for more cooking. YUM!

Mr. PeacockI do exist! Well, I do exist beyond the boundaries of Monster Cat episodes at least. I know, I know, I haven’t posted anything outside of Monster Cat in ages. Did you miss me? No, I didn’t think so. My cat is pretty darned cute, you don’t need me.

Jon was in town the end of this week and teaching a class in the city. We had dinner with him 3 nights in a row which was great fun even if it involved going into Philly so many times! Last night involved a great deal of silliness and beer as well. Merricke and Siobhan joined us Thursday night and last night which made for additional enjoyment and general spreading of the joy of beer.

My news is that I have remembered to knit. I did some scarves to remember how to follow simple instructions. I’ve been doing little hats for one of the baby charities to remember how to work with double-pointed needles. I am not a fan of metal DPNs but I happen to have a lot of them in very convenient sizes. I asked my mother for a recommendation of a book with lots of little projects in it that could keep me busy and make me try new techniques. There is now an over-stuffed flat rate box in the mail to me. I should have known this would happen, I guess, but I really did just ask expecting a book recommendation! I’m working my way up to bigger projects, I guess, but I really enjoy doing the quick little stuff. Instant gratification is pretty darned awesome.

In other news, I am still a slacker employee of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, otherwise known as unemployed. I have a lead or two but the market is more than a little dismal right now so I’m not stressing about the lack of opportunities. I look at a couple job sites, laugh that employers want people with 10 years of highly specialized and/or technical experience but only want to pay as if the person is fresh out of school, and move on.

I think my writing class this term is going pretty well. It’s a bit small – just 3 students – which is both good and bad. I’ve gone through a phase of “oh no, I can’t actually write anything good at all” and I’m coming out the other side now, which is, as you might imagine, a huge relief. I’m renegotiating my use of adjectives as well as learning a lot about the conscious structure and intermingling of stories and characters. The class is over in 3 weeks and I’m starting to look around for another writing class to take me into the summer. UARTS is great – 3 hour classes, great instructors, credit – but expensive.

I also started twittering recently… it’s rather random and disjointed, but you can now follow me on Twitter if you really want to. It’s more of an experiment… again. I tried Twitter ages ago when it first came out and was not interested enough in it to remember my login/password.

By the way… we saw “Knowing” today. It’s a horrible movie barely worthy of my words. There was some horrible acting, terrible dialogue, a completely pathetic plot and an un-compelling resolution… all crowned with bizarre religious overtones and other crap. There are a lot of forced and illogical jumps not to mention a failed attempt to imbue a sense of urgency by having the characters run around like chicken with their heads cut off. No spoilers here, but there are 2 major aspects of this movie that should have ensured I enjoyed it. Alas, I now add it to the list with The Spirit… the title of that list is “Movies I wish I’d skipped – 2009.”

I have survived my first week of unemployment! My contract at Pfizer ended the day before Thanksgiving, so Monday was my first official day as a Lady of Leisure. I had a more productive week than I’d expected. I did a lot of paperwork-type things such as applying for unemployment, poking at my resume, updating my LinkedIn profile and insuring my new car.

Oh right. That new car. I picked up my new 2009 MINI Clubman on Monday. Because I think it’s always better to start something like unemployment with a bang. I suspect I have lost my title to the Subaru so I need to order a replacement title before I can sell it, but I will be selling the Green Hornet. No pictures of the new hotness yet – it’s getting its final touches Tuesday morning (bonnet stripes!), so you’ll just have to wait.

I finally successfully rearranged my desk and got it vaguely clean. Of course, it’s already cluttered again but there’s more space for the Monster Cat now. Unfortunately he likes to take his half out of the middle and in this case the middle is the desk space between my chair and the keyboard. If he were smaller, he’d be an excellent wrist rest. Well, and if he didn’t insist on leaning his head on the keyboard. The turf war continues…

Thursday evening was the final reading for my non-fiction essay class. Four of us read our final essays and I think it went fairly well. Nerves attacked us all a little – the whole first page I was reading I had that “need to remember to breathe” thing going. However, I think all of us did very well! We had a small audience and people were appropriately appreciative and amused by our essay I think. The Fop quoted some of the best lines from everyone’s essays all through dinner, so I’ll call the reading a success!

So despite a little anxiety about the reading Thursday, as of yesterday I feel like I’m actually relaxed. The weather has turned chilly, the latest issue of Mouse Guard finally arrived, the Church is putting up their Christmas lights right now, and I myself actually will have time to decorate for and enjoy the holidays this year. We’ll see how long this bliss lasts.

Photos & Words - A collective show and readingAutumn has been rather jam-packed this year. Among the things keeping me from posting here and doing Nanowrimo was the essay class I took from UARTS: Writing This American Life. We are doing our final reading as part of a combined show with one of the photography classes Thursday, December 4th. There are 5 of us reading, starting around 7 pm. Some of the essays are more serious than others… Mine essay is about cars and involves a brief, torrid love affair with a Mustang among other things. This is my first ever public reading and I’d love to have a few friends come and fill out the audience!
Here’s the info for anyone interested:
