PersephoneAnother favorite quilt from the quilt show last month - this one is titled “Persephone” and was quilted by Peg Collins of Alamosa, Colorado. (Sometimes I did successfully get the info card in the photo!) I love that the edge of her gown is the edge of the quilt. The division between winter and summer is perhaps predictable but beautiful all the same. Persephone seemed an appropriate quilt to post for May Day.

More garden work is planned for today after work, which also seems appropriate. I want to get those beds prepped for planting before I go away next week. (I fly out Sunday, actually.)

No cat casualties yet today but Tennyson is definitely pushing it.

Coffee was applied early and will be applied often today. I didn’t sleep well and needed my brain to be awake for my 9 a.m. meeting. And my 9:30 meeting. Whee! All went well and productively so the coffee must have worked. But how long will it last?

Vacation is over.

I am not awake though I’ve been up for almost 2 hours.

That is all.

I think I will blame my fuzzy brain on both the “Spring ahead” beginning of Daylight Savings time and the fact that I was up at 5:30 EDT this morning to run the Fop to the airport. At least it was quick. And cold - it’s still chilly and windy here today. My pajamas were still warm when I got home and put them on to go back to sleep. I then proceeded to sleep until almost 2 pm. The house was so beautifully peacefully this morning that apparently I couldn’t help myself.

I have successfully gone grocery shopping today and picked up some seeds to get started out on the sun porch. I need to make a list for transplanting so that I can get supplies for starting seeds and making the houseplants happy. I still need to find some hot pepper seeds too. I did find more seeds for cat grass so the cats will benefit from my planting glee as well. Monster Cat is a lawnmower. Tenny’s taste for greenery is one of the reasons the doors to the sun porch remain closed. Other reasons include the leaky windows and the intense heat when the sun is hitting those windows.

Yeah, I had such high hopes for today’s productivity levels but I have been thwarted.

However, all is not lost! I have been randomly wandering the web for my amusement and yours!

Today I have learned that coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in the American diet. So, while that cute little girl in the commercial puts her glasses of grape juice in front of her closet to protect her from monsters (”My antioxidants will protect me, Daddy.”), I’ll be brewing up a big french press full of coffee to keep the boogie man at bay. Well, if he’s nice maybe I’ll offer him some coffee too.

I also found a neat new idea for a flash diffuser on the cheap. I’ve been using a 3×5 card to bounce the flash up lately. The only thing I’m worried about with the film container idea linked above is heat. If taking a lot of photos in quick succession, it might get a little warm in there. But I like the effect shown in the examples - subjects are still brightly lit without the obvious glare of a compact flash. For my next trick I’ll find a white film container to try it out with.

Monster Hoodies… cute, toothy, googly-eyed sweatshirts.

A presidential candidate I could get behind… (and lots of cute Mac-head t-shirts are over there too…)

The Itty Bitty Kitty Committee has new itty bitty kitties!!! This is the purest cuteness on the web.

Monster Cat has been participating in a lot of conference calls lately. If only we could get my cat and my boss’ dog on the payroll. They have broken the ice at critical times in meetings.

Friday night conversation… I’m taking The Fop to the airport Sunday morning for a 7:45 a.m. flight.
Me: You fucker.
The Fop: What did I do now?
Me: Guess what Saturday is.
The Fop: Uh… what?
Me: Spring ahead. You fucker.

Yes, that means that when we get up at 5:30 to leave at 6 our bodies will be thinking it’s really 4:30 a.m. It’s not his fault really, but it made me feel better. But the thought of delivering him to the airport in my pjs and getting back into bed when I get home sounds better and better.

You might have guessed by the very late posting of Monster Cat yesterday that I had a busy week. It was lovely to veg out in front of the tv and watch a couple movies last night though it took a bit to disengage my brain enough from other things to actually just watch the movies. Today I woke up feeling rather crappy, like I’m coming down with something. Walking around watering my plants winded me. Never a good sign. Coffee, toast and an Odwalla Strawberry C Monster consumed, I now feel slightly more alive though getting dressed took a lot out of me. Blah. Strawberry C Monster rocks though. I usually drink it when I’m traveling to help fight off the ick. I don’t usually like juice, but I love strawberries. Yum. So here’s hoping this doesn’t turn into a full-fledge cold or flu. March is not a month I can afford to be less than 100%. More sleep!

So yeah, I have no content but at least typing doesn’t make me tired.

Somehow it got to be after midnight.

I have an 8:30 meeting in the morning.

For which I need to do a half hour of prep.

And perhaps I should be caffeinated before the meeting too.

Worst part? I’m rather awake.

Bother.

Maybe being in bed will make me sleepy.

So yeah, it was a big, bad, crazy Monday. But my Monday wasn’t the worst in the office, so I’m counting myself lucky. I started by going to the wrong site then running to the other site and being late to a meeting. I was busy and productive most of the day - a pleasant combination not always associated with being on-site. The guy having the worst day in the office helped me make a lot of progress on a headache project schedule. Hurray! Had a lovely dinner with a new team member - corrupted her appropriately, I hope. Now I have retired to my posh hotel room. Well, I pretend it’s posh. I miss Vancouver and Le Soleil. For so many reasons. And I’m really tired. I will sleep tonight… or else I’ll be a freakishly tired girl tomorrow. Possibly both.

Whee!

Yep. Tired.

Columbine podsThe snow was indeed gone when we got home on Saturday.

Before I get into a weekend recap, this is one photo in a series I took playing with depth of field and focus. I love columbine flowers and seed pods. The leaves below are a baby maple tree’s statement that, “Hey! I’m a real tree too! Look at me change colors!”

The trip to Virginia was short but fun. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel great most of the weekend, but that was probably due to the hotel beds being un-sleepable. (I hereby declare “sleepable” to be a word.) Thursday night we had a bit of a kerfuffle with the car service who was supposed to pick us up at the train station in DC and take us out to Vienna, VA. Standing in the chill while figuring out transportation may have contributed to my lack of greatness over the weekend. We had fabulous steak for dinner to console ourselves. Yum steak!

I didn’t sleep well on the un-sleepable bed Thursday night and couldn’t even convince myself to sleep in. When you think to yourself, “Maybe I’ll feel better when I get up.” it’s not a good sign. I did get up and got my one thing for the day accomplished - I hit the Mall for a haircut. My hair is shorter and thinner now (hurray for cool thinning shears!) and in general neater. I wandered the mall for a while and lost my book somewhere. *grumble* I also found one of the tiniest Lush stores I’ve ever been in - it was basically a short, glassed in hallway, perhaps six feet wide. Tiny but well organized and just wide enough for 2 people to get around each other. I resisted spending money in Levenger but I couldn’t resist Lush. In general, my mall outing was lethargic despite the caffeine… I felt better once I got back to the hotel and had some fruit salad and more water but spent the rest of the afternoon vegging out in front of the tv with my laptop.

Small Maple ColorsThe Fop’s company’s holiday party was pretty awesome. I got to meet most of the people I’d been hearing about (or hearing on speaker phone) for the past couple of years. Everyone was delightful, smart and amusing. We figured out that of the 16 people there we had 4 people from Maine! That’s pretty exciting, at least to us! The food was delicious and the whole event was lovely thanks to the fabulous planning Kristi did (one of the Mainers!). I think we all ate too much but it really was gloriously yummy. (Yum! More steak!) It’s always fun to dress up too - imagine, the Fop wore a suit!

Friday night was another night for not sleeping. Stupid un-sleepable bed. Saturday we needed to get to the train station a little early because the automatic ticket printer in Philly had failed to print both of our return tickets. Someone figured that out for us and we hit the lovely bookstore in Union Station to find me something to read. Not that I needed the book. Once we got on the train I crashed and slept fitfully most of the way back to Philly. The nap helped a little, but essentially the rest of our day was shot because we were both so tired.

I do like Amtrak despite the ridiculous prices. At no time did Amtrak security make me show them my personal hygiene products or make me remove my shoes. I didn’t even have to unload my computer from my backpack. I appreciate that so much.

Sunday was spent sleeping in. Happy sleepable bed, at least comparatively speaking! Grocery shopping and other stuff was achieved.

The weekend now seems very far away (as does the beginning of this post)! I started writing this at some point this morning and work got… busy. Very busy. But in a mostly happy way. My boss is out of the office unexpectedly today and tomorrow so I got roped in to a couple of unexpected projects beyond my usual Monday fun! I really enjoy feeling productive and today was definitely all about the productive. I was on enough of a roll that I even made something new for dinner (lollipop lamb chops with 3 different experimental seasonings) and then made a batch of fudge. Go me!

It’s Tuesday, I’m in Connecticut and I’m wearing polka-dot socks. I have training this morning and most of tomorrow and meeting most of the rest of the time. I’m not sure when I’m going to get actual work done this week. Yes, I’m still tired. I started waking up at 2:40 this morning and then woke periodically, about every hour, until the alarm went off at 6. I would really like my body to get used to this new allergy medicine because it’s doing lovely things for my actual allergies… I don’t want to have to choose between sleeping and breathing!

It’s cold out there! YAY! Not too cold, chilly is a better word. I do wish I’d brought gloves. The steering wheel of my pumpkin-mobile is cold! (Yes, it’s a pumpkin. I got an orange Saturn Vue from the rental place this week. It’s really quite cute and festive.)

I slept poorly and woke up well before my alarm. I did not succeed in snoozing luxuriously before the alarm finally did go off. In fact, I got up feeling slightly feverish and unsteady, classic “not enough sleep” feelings for me. I would have had plenty of sleep if I could have stopped my brain from churning last night or if I could have fallen back asleep this morning. Perhaps what I did get would have been enough if I’d slept more solidly, more comfortably. But here I am, awake and unhappy about it, earlier than desired on a Monday morning. Blah.

I’m flying up to Connecticut for a quick trip this afternoon. I’ll be back Wednesday night. All in all I wish I weren’t going, but that’s probably mostly the tiredness talking.

Okay, I’ve been up long enough to play with fire now… time to make coffee!
