So, the first episode of the new Knight Rider is available for free via iTunes.

A few little things I’d like to take issue with:

  1. KITT is not a transformer. Before the opening credits he was 3 different body types, including a pick-up truck.
  2. Making “high tech” references to Zip drives is pathetic.
  3. The lead of “Knight Rider” should not carry a gun.*
  4. KITT should have a sense of decorum and yet apparently with all his AI goodness he’s not bright enough to figure out the obvious.
  5. Instead of a semi-trailer, Knight Industries keeps a bat cave for KITT. Cliché much?
  6. The actors are challenged by their jobs, which is sad considering the writing is so elementary.
  7. Michael should never call KITT “dude.”
  8. Since when did Knight Industries partner so heavily with the FBI that the agency gets to place two secondary characters that appear they will become regulars for at least the first season?

The best thing I can say about it? KITT’s lucky to get gratuitous green laser effects in his bat cave. Oh and the glorified receptionist who speaks 9 languages toys amusingly with the over-educated science nerd.

Sometimes free still isn’t cheap enough. Another one of my favorite shows from childhood has been ruined.

*Just as in the original Knight Rider, the first episode tells the story of the “invention” of Michael Knight. It’s possible that future episodes will not involve gun-toting but I’m not holding my breath nor am I interested enough to find out.
